How to start your own supplement brand in Canada

To start your own supplement brand in Canada you need a product with an English and French label, a Canadian importer, and a product licence (NPN) held by your brand. PharmaEurope covers the whole product side. PharmaEurope runs the project in-house at its certified plant in the European Union. That covers the formula and sample, label and packaging design, printing, manufacturing, filling, quality control, export documents and shipping, so one company answers for the finished product. PharmaEurope already ships to Canada. White label on a ready-made formula starts from 100 units, your own formula from 500 bottles for capsules and tablets, and powders and sachets from 300 kg of finished blend. Production takes from 2 weeks on a ready-made formula and from 4 weeks on your own. The label is printed at the plant in English and French, and every batch ships with a specification and a Certificate of Analysis.

How do I start a supplement company in Canada?

It takes five steps, and PharmaEurope runs the first three: formula, label and production. After that come delivery to your importer, clearance, and sale under your NPN.

  1. Choose the formula. Pick a ready-made formula from 100 units, a catalogue formula adjusted for you (a different dose, a swapped ingredient or a new flavour), or your own formula from 500 bottles. The catalogue is on the ready-made formulas page.
  2. Approve the sample and the label. PharmaEurope designs and prints the label and packaging in English and French from the text your licence holder supplies, including the NPN. Nothing is printed and nothing is manufactured until you have signed off the sample and the final artwork.
  3. Produce the batch. Production takes from 2 weeks on a ready-made formula and from 4 weeks on your own. Every batch is tested before release and ships with its specification and Certificate of Analysis.
  4. Ship to Canada. PharmaEurope hands over EXW at the plant by default, or delivers FCA or DAP on request to the point your importer names, with the documents your importer needs.
  5. Clear and sell. Your Canadian importer clears the goods with the CBSA, and your brand sells under its own NPN.

Who does what when you launch a supplement brand in Canada?

Four parties each have one job. PharmaEurope makes and documents the product, the importer and its customs broker bring it into Canada, and your brand holds the licence.

PartyJob
PharmaEuropeFormula and sample, label and packaging design and printing, manufacturing, filling, quality control; issues the specification and Certificate of Analysis; sends copies of the site certificates; delivers EXW, FCA or DAP
Canadian importer of recordRegisters with the CBSA in CARM, declares the goods, pays duties and taxes, and holds the site licence
Customs brokerFiles the entry for the importer and confirms the tariff line and the CETA treatment
Your brandHolds the product licence and its NPN, and supplies the Canadian regulatory text for the label

White label or private label: which is the faster start in Canada?

White label is the faster start: a ready-made formula sold under your brand from 100 units, in production from 2 weeks, with no development work. Private label with your own formula starts from 500 bottles per product for capsules and tablets. It takes from 4 weeks of production, plus the sample and approval steps before that. A ready-made formula stays in PharmaEurope's shared catalogue, so another brand may sell the same composition under its own label. The terms for a formula developed for your brand are set in your contract. A catalogue formula can also be adjusted for you, with a different dose, a swapped ingredient or a new flavour. Every change goes through a sample first.

Can I start a supplement brand with a small first order?

Yes. PharmaEurope makes white label first runs from 100 units, so a Canadian brand can test one product before a standard run of 500 bottles. The minimum applies per product: three flavours are three products, and each carries its own minimum. Powders and sachets start from 300 kg of finished blend. Effervescent tablets come in tubes of 20, with a low minimum order quoted per tube count. The full table is on the minimum order quantity page.

How long does it take to launch a supplement brand from Europe in Canada?

Production takes from 2 weeks on a ready-made formula and from 4 weeks on your own. The clock starts when you have signed off the sample and the label. On the shortest published sailings, sea transit to Montreal then takes about 11 days port to port from Rotterdam and about 13 days from Antwerp. Door to door takes longer, and Canadian clearance follows arrival. A bigger batch runs on the same line in about the same time, so a larger order does not stretch the schedule.

Why do Canadian brands manufacture with PharmaEurope?

PharmaEurope already ships to Canada and runs the whole project in-house, from idea to finished pack, so one company answers for the finished product.

  • One company from formula to finished pack. PharmaEurope covers formula and sample, label and packaging design, printing, manufacturing, filling, quality control, export documents and shipping. All of it is done at the same plant and priced in one quote, and nothing is sent to a separate packer or printer. See all services.
  • Already shipping to Canada. Goods are handed over EXW at the plant by default, or delivered FCA or DAP on request, to the point your importer names.
  • A certified plant in the European Union. ISO 22000:2018, GMP to the Food Supplements Europe guide and HACCP under Regulation (EC) 852/2004, all issued by BM Certification. Their scope covers tablets, capsules and powders. The plant is also registered with the US FDA as a food facility.
  • A small start. White label from 100 units, your own formula from 500 bottles, powders and sachets from 300 kg of finished blend.
  • A bilingual label made where the product is made. The label is designed and printed at the plant in English and French.
  • Documents with every batch. Every batch gets a specification and a Certificate of Analysis. Raw material documentation, an allergen statement and a shelf-life statement are provided with the order or on request, and copies of the site certificates come on request.
  • A second supply route outside the United States. The product is made in the European Union, and goods can enter Canada under CETA when they meet its rules of origin.
  • More than 25 years of manufacturing across the group, 70+ specialists and export to 42 countries.
  • A reply within 24 hours, Monday to Friday.

“Ordering a first batch from a small workshop is a real risk for a brand: quality is not guaranteed from batch to batch, and there is no capacity to grow when the product takes off. We went the other way and invested in new, flexible production lines, where switching to the next product does not cost hours of changeover and cleaning — the losses that make older plants ask for thousands of units. That is why a first run of a ready-made formula can start from 100 units, and the same line scales up when the product sells.”

Questions

Questions about starting a supplement brand in Canada

Can a Canadian brand have its supplements made in Europe?

Yes. PharmaEurope manufactures white and private label food supplements in the European Union and already ships to Canada. A Canadian brand starts with a ready-made formula from 100 units or its own formula from 500 bottles for capsules and tablets. Your brand holds the product licence (NPN), and a Canadian importer clears the goods.

Does PharmaEurope handle the whole project, or do I need other suppliers?

PharmaEurope does all of it at its plant: formula and sample, label and packaging design, printing, manufacturing, filling, quality control, export documents and shipping. Everything is priced in one quote, and one company answers for the finished product. In Canada, your brand holds the NPN and your importer clears the goods.

Do I need my own formula to start?

No. PharmaEurope has more than 500 ready-made formulas in production across capsules, tablets, softgels and effervescent tablets, and any of them can carry your label. A catalogue formula can be adjusted with a different dose, a swapped ingredient or a new flavour, through a sample first.

What is the minimum order to start a supplement brand in Canada?

PharmaEurope makes white label products on ready-made formulas from 100 units and your own formula from 500 bottles for capsules and tablets. Powders and sachets start from 300 kg of finished blend. Every minimum is per product.

Who holds the NPN?

Your brand holds the product licence and its NPN, and your Canadian importer holds the site licence. PharmaEurope supplies the manufacturer documents both rely on: the specification, the Certificate of Analysis and copies of the site certificates.

Can PharmaEurope print English and French labels?

Yes. PharmaEurope designs and prints the label and packaging at the plant in English and French. The licence holder supplies the regulatory text and the NPN. Nothing goes to print until you have approved the final artwork.

Does PharmaEurope already ship to Canada?

Yes. PharmaEurope already ships to Canada: EXW at the plant by default, with FCA or DAP on request. Your Canadian importer or forwarder takes over at the agreed point.

Is the PharmaEurope plant certified?

Yes. The PharmaEurope plant holds ISO 22000:2018, GMP to the Food Supplements Europe guide and HACCP under Regulation (EC) 852/2004, issued by BM Certification, with a scope covering tablets, capsules and powders. It is also registered with the US FDA as a food facility, which is a registration and not an approval. Copies of the certificates are sent on request.

Who owns the formula?

A ready-made formula stays in PharmaEurope's shared catalogue, so other brands may sell the same composition under their own labels. The terms for a formula developed for your brand are set in your contract with PharmaEurope.

Can I get samples before the first order?

Yes. PharmaEurope sends samples of existing products to companies seriously considering an order, so you can check the product, the pack and the label before the first batch.
