Launching your first own-brand supplement
A first product usually fails on cost before it fails on the market: development is paid for once, stock is paid for twice. Taking a formula that already exists removes the first cost entirely. More than 300 ready-made formulas are developed and in production, selected first runs have been produced from 100 units, and you can be selling from 4 weeks after the artwork is approved.
What comes with the order
- No development time to pay for: the formula and its documentation already exist
- Stock packaging — PET bottles, tubes, pouches — so nothing waits on tooling
- Selected first runs from 100 units, which is a market test rather than a warehouse
- Start selling from 4 weeks, counted from the approved artwork
The three things to decide before asking for a price
Most first enquiries arrive as “how much does it cost”, and there is no honest answer to that on its own. Three decisions turn it into a real number: the format, because a capsule and a sachet are different factories inside the same plant; the active and its dose, because that is most of the cost; and how many units you want for the first order. With those three, a price exists. Without them, any figure quoted is a guess dressed up as a quote.
Ready-made is not the same as generic
A ready-made formula is one that has already been developed, trialled and documented. It is not a product that anyone else's name is already on, and it is not fixed forever: a dose can be raised, a component removed, a flavour changed, once the volume supports the new trial. The point of starting there is that the first launch carries no development risk, and the second one can carry as much as you want it to.
What the first order teaches you
A hundred units tells you something a spreadsheet cannot: whether people buy this product from you, at your price, with your label on it. That is worth more than a lower unit cost on a pallet you have to store. When it sells, the same specification scales to 500 bottles and beyond without re-developing anything.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really start with 100 units?
Selected first production runs have been produced from 100 units, depending on the format and the packaging. The standard minimum order for capsules and tablets is 500 bottles per product, and that is the volume most first orders settle at.
Do I need my own formula to start?
No. More than 300 ready-made formulas are already developed and in production across capsules, tablets, softgels and effervescent tablets, and any of them can carry your label without a day of development work.
How soon can I be selling?
From four weeks, counted from the moment the formula and the label artwork are approved. Before that clock starts there is a sample to approve, so the honest planning figure includes sample development at the front.
What does the price depend on?
The format, the active and its dose, the quantity and the packaging. A quote is given for the quantity you ask about and for a larger one, so you can see where the unit cost goes as the order grows.
