Private label mushroom supplements

PharmaEurope manufactures private label mushroom supplements in Europe, at our EU plant, under ISO 22000:2018, GMP and HACCP. Seven ready-made mushroom formulas are in production: lion’s mane, lion’s mane with ginkgo, reishi, shiitake, chaga with zinc, cordyceps and a four-mushroom blend. Turkey tail, maitake and the other mushrooms brands ask for are made to order. Any of them can carry your label.

In short: with mushrooms, the part of the mushroom and the way it is extracted decide what can be sold in the EU and what the label may say. The standard run is 500 bottles per product, first runs start from 100 units, and production takes from 2 weeks.

The mushroom formulas we already make

Mushroom extracts are declared as the amount of dried mushroom they correspond to: “extract equivalent to 1,000 mg” means the extract made from 1,000 mg of mushroom. The table uses the same wording as the specification.

Formula Declared as Format
Lion’s maneExtract equivalent to 1,000 mg lion’s maneCapsule
Lion’s mane with ginkgoLion’s mane extract equivalent to 500 mg + ginkgo biloba extract equivalent to 2,500 mgCapsule
ReishiExtract equivalent to 1,000 mg reishiCapsule
ShiitakeExtract equivalent to 1,000 mg shiitakeCapsule
Chaga with zincChaga extract equivalent to 1,250 mg + zinc 25 mgCapsule
CordycepsCordyceps 1,850 mgTablet
Four-mushroom blendShiitake, reishi, lion’s mane and cordycepsCapsule

Reishi and chaga also sit inside a stress complex, reishi inside an immune complex, and lion’s mane inside a brain and focus complex; those are listed under their own categories on the categories page. Full compositions, the part of the mushroom used and the extraction method are on each formula’s specification, supplied on request.

EU status

Which mushroom forms can be sold in the EU?

In the EU the same mushroom can be an ordinary food in one form and a novel food needing authorisation in another. The part of the mushroom and the way it is extracted decide, not the name on the jar.

  • Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus). The fruiting body and its hot-water extract are not novel foods, for foods and food supplements alike (Commission consultation, 28 February 2025). Dehydrated lion’s mane mycelium powder is a novel food (29 October 2019), so it cannot replace the fruiting body on an EU label.
  • Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) and shiitake (Lentinula edodes). The same pattern: the fruiting body and its hot-water extract are not novel (28 February 2025), the dehydrated mycelium powder is (29 October 2019).
  • Chaga (Inonotus obliquus). The extract of the fruiting body is not novel in food supplements (28 February 2025). Chaga in ordinary food and drinks is a novel food (14 November 2024), so a capsule is fine and a “chaga coffee” is a different regulatory question.
  • Maitake (Grifola frondosa). The hot-water extract of the fruiting body is not novel (28 February 2025); the mycelium powder is (29 October 2019).
  • Cordyceps. The name covers different organisms: Cordyceps militaris, Ophiocordyceps sinensis and the fermented strain sold as CS-4. Their EU status is not the same, so the specification names the organism, not just “cordyceps”.
  • Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor). There is no Commission consultation that settles its status, so we check it against the destination country before we quote.

The water-extract rule has a general basis: by common agreement with the Member States, a non-concentrated water extract of a food that is not novel shares its status. Ethanol and dual extracts are not covered by the consultations above. Label

What a mushroom label may say in the EU

No mushroom has an authorised health claim in the EU, so the label sells the mushroom, the part and the extract, not an effect.

None of these species appears among the health claims authorised under Regulation (EU) 432/2012. Two general claims for reishi, on immune defences and on circulation, sit on the EU list of botanical claims that are on hold: neither authorised nor rejected, and not a safe basis for a label. What the label can carry is composition: the species in Latin, fruiting body or not, the extract and what it is equivalent to, and a beta-glucan content as a figure. The cholesterol claim for beta-glucans applies only to oat and barley beta-glucans, not to mushroom ones.

A label that needs an authorised claim gets it from a vitamin or mineral in the formula. Our chaga capsule carries 25 mg of zinc, well above the 1.5 mg a daily dose needs to be a source of zinc, so it may say that zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system. We check the artwork against the authorised wording before it goes to print; the label itself is the brand owner’s responsibility under Regulation (EU) 1169/2011.

Capsules in a blister pack
Species, part and extract are composition statements. An effect is a health claim, and none is authorised for mushrooms.

Two ways to start, and what the pack does to the price

Ready-made, your label

Pick a mushroom from the list, choose the capsule count per bottle, and approve the label we design or send your own artwork. The standard run is 500 bottles per product; ready-made formulas in stock packaging start from 100 units for a first run.

Your own formula

Another mushroom, a different extract or dose, a blend with vitamins or minerals, a powder instead of capsules. The raw material and its extraction are checked against EU novel food status before anything is quoted, then a sample is made before production.

Packs

Bottles of 30, 60, 90 or 120 capsules. Blister and carton are possible and carry the packaging supplier’s own minimum.

Common questions

About private label mushroom supplements

What is the minimum order for private label mushroom supplements?

The standard minimum is 500 bottles per product, and ready-made formulas in stock packaging start from 100 units for a first run. A mushroom that is not on the ready-made list is a custom formula, made after a sample is approved.

Can I sell lion’s mane supplements in the EU?

Yes, as the fruiting body or its hot-water extract: a European Commission consultation concluded on 28 February 2025 that the fruiting-body extract powder is not a novel food, for foods and food supplements. Dehydrated lion’s mane mycelium powder is a novel food and needs an authorisation first.

Fruiting body or mycelium: why does it matter?

Because EU law treats them as different foods. The fruiting body of lion’s mane, reishi, shiitake and maitake was eaten in the EU before 15 May 1997; their dehydrated mycelium powder was not, so it is a novel food. The label and the specification have to say which part is used.

Is chaga allowed in food supplements?

Yes. The extract of the chaga fruiting body is not novel in food supplements, according to a Commission consultation of 28 February 2025. The same chaga used in ordinary food or drinks is a novel food, so the rule depends on the product, not only on the mushroom.

Which cordyceps do you use?

The ready-made cordyceps is a tablet with 1,850 mg, and its specification names the organism. Cordyceps militaris, Ophiocordyceps sinensis and the fermented CS-4 strain have different EU status, so tell us the market and we confirm which one fits before quoting.

Can the label say what the mushroom does?

No. There is no authorised EU health claim for lion’s mane, reishi, chaga, cordyceps, shiitake, maitake or turkey tail. A formula that needs an authorised claim takes it from a vitamin or mineral it contains, such as the zinc in our chaga capsule.

Can I state the beta-glucan content?

Yes, as a composition figure from the specification. The EU claim on beta-glucans and blood cholesterol applies only to beta-glucans from oats and barley, so a mushroom product cannot use it.

Do you make turkey tail and maitake?

Yes, to order. The hot-water extract of the maitake fruiting body is not novel (Commission consultation, 28 February 2025). Turkey tail has no Commission consultation settling its status, so we check it against the destination country before quoting.

How long does a mushroom supplement order take?

From 2 weeks for a ready-made formula under your label.

Do the EU rules apply in the UK?

Not automatically. Great Britain keeps its own novel food list, and the 2025 EU consultations on mushroom extracts have no separate GB decision yet. Tell us the market with the enquiry and we check the rule that applies there. See the UK market page.
