Capabilities / Equipment

Your product is made on pharmaceutical machinery

Most contract manufacturers describe their equipment as modern and state of the art and leave it there. Below are the actual machines, by manufacturer and model, with the numbers from their technical data. You can look every one of them up.

The plant is in Mārupe, Latvia, in the European Union.

Rated outputs come from the manufacturers' own technical data. Actual throughput on your product depends on the formula, the tooling and the pack — a 25 mm tablet and an 11 mm tablet do not come off the same press at the same speed.

The argument

Why a small brand should care about industrial machinery

A rated output of 396,000 tablets an hour is not an argument for a company ordering 500 bottles. It is the wrong number to look at, and most manufacturers quote it because it is the biggest one they have.

  • The dose you want is not limited by the machine. Capsules from size 5 to 000, tablets to 25 mm, blister forming depth 24 mm. Whether your dose fits is decided by the bulk density of your blend, not by what the line can handle.
  • The pack is a real choice, not a default. Four blister film types including cold-formed aluminium, seven bottle sizes, two closure systems, cartons from 28 × 12 × 55 mm. A plant with one packing option gives you one answer whatever your product needs.
  • A counted bottle is a counted bottle. Infrared counting on twelve channels, and rejection of broken or half tablets — the difference between a bottle that says sixty capsules and a bottle that contains sixty capsules.
  • And the equipment is new. The plant is being re-equipped right now with new German machinery. That matters at small volumes for one reason: a modern line changes over from one product to the next far faster than an older one, where tooling is swapped by hand and settings are dialled in by trial. Changeover cost is what forces a factory to demand 200,000 units before it will start. Ours is lower, which is why a few hundred units is a conversation here and a refusal elsewhere.
Tablet compression

IMA PREXIMA 300

ManufacturerIMA Active, division of I.M.A. Industria Macchine Automatiche, Italy
TypeSingle-sided rotary tablet press
ApplicationTablets, effervescent tablets, minitablets
Press stations27 to 55, depending on turret and tooling
Rated output194,400 to 396,000 tablets/hour
Maximum tablet diameter25 mm
Product contactNo oil path from the upper punches into the product zone

Output follows tablet size, and the difference is not small: 25 mm → 194,400/hour, 19 mm → 302,400/hour, 11 mm with IMA 8 tooling → 396,000/hour.

A large tablet is not simply a bigger version of a small one; it costs more per unit to press. That is worth knowing before you settle on a dose that only fits a 25 mm tablet.

Hard capsule filling

IMA PRACTICA 100

ManufacturerIMA Active, Italy
TypeCapsule filling machine
ApplicationPowders, granules and pellets into hard capsules
Rated output100,000 capsules/hour
Capsules per cycle12
Capsule sizes5 to 00EL, plus 000 and DB

That size range answers a question we are asked constantly: whether a dose fits. Size 000 is the largest standard capsule made, and size 5 the smallest.

So the constraint on your product is the bulk density of the blend, not the machine. A light botanical powder needs a larger capsule than a dense mineral at the same milligram dose — send us the specification and we will tell you which size it lands in.

Blister packing

Uhlmann B 1240

ManufacturerUhlmann Pac-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG, Laupheim, Germany
ApplicationBlister packing of tablets, capsules and softgels
Rated outputup to 250 blisters/minute
SealingPlaten sealing — uniform pressure across the whole format
Format areaup to 128 × 156.5 mm
Forming depthup to 24 mm
Forming filmsPVC, PVC/PVDC, PVC/Aclar, aluminium (cold-form)
Lid foilheat-sealable aluminium-based materials

The film list is the part worth reading. PVC is the standard barrier; PVC/PVDC and PVC/Aclar raise moisture protection; cold-formed aluminium gives an almost total barrier and is the answer for a hygroscopic or oxygen-sensitive formula that a bottle cannot protect.

A forming depth of 24 mm means the blister takes large softgels and oval tablets, not only flat ones.

Counting and bottling

Cremer CF 1220

ManufacturerCremer Speciaalmachines B.V., Lisse, Netherlands (Uhlmann Group)
Type12-channel linear counter with bottle filling
Rated output50 bottles/minute
Counting speedup to 5,000 products/minute
Counting accuracyinfrared detection that guarantees 100% accurate counts, per the manufacturer
Detection12-channel infrared

A counting machine is how a bottle labelled 60 capsules contains sixty capsules. Infrared counting also rejects broken or half tablets, which a volumetric filler cannot see.

Speeds above are for the CF 1220 with twelve channels. The CF 1220D is a different machine — twenty-four channels, up to 100 bottles a minute — and we do not quote its numbers as ours.

Cartoning

IMA IC 150

Intermittent motion cartoning machine for blisters, bottles and jars. Cartons from 28 × 12 × 55 mm to 92 × 60 × 190 mm, closed with a straight or reverse tuck-in, or hot-melt glued.

What is being installed now

The plant is currently being rebuilt and new German machinery is going in. Once it is running, this page will name it the same way as everything above — manufacturer, model, technical data — and we will publish photographs and video of the line rather than descriptions of it.

In practice

What this equipment means for your product

The whole route under one roof

Compression or filling, blistering or bottling, cartoning — one site, one batch record, no product leaving the building between steps.

Real output, stated honestly

The numbers above are rated outputs from the manufacturers' data. Actual throughput on your product depends on the formula, the tooling and the pack.

Room for large doses

Capsules to size 000, tablets to 25 mm, blister forming depth 24 mm. High-milligram actives fit.

Barrier options for sensitive formulas

PVC/PVDC, PVC/Aclar and cold-formed aluminium for products that oxidise or pull moisture.

Common questions

About our equipment

What equipment do you use to manufacture food supplements?

Products are made at the plant in Mārupe, Latvia, on an IMA PREXIMA 300 tablet press, an IMA PRACTICA 100 capsule filler, an Uhlmann B 1240 blister line, a Cremer CF 1220 counting and bottling system and an IMA IC 150 cartoner. Every machine is named with its manufacturer and technical data above.

How many tablets per hour can you produce?

The PREXIMA 300 is rated from 194,400 tablets per hour at 25 mm diameter to 396,000 per hour at 11 mm with IMA 8 tooling. Real output on a given product depends on the blend, the tooling and the pack that follows compression.

Which capsule sizes can you fill?

Sizes 5 to 00EL, plus 000 and DB. In practice the limit on a product is the bulk density of the blend rather than the machine: a light botanical powder needs a larger capsule than a dense mineral at the same milligram dose.

Can you blister pack a moisture-sensitive supplement?

Yes. The B 1240 forms PVC, PVC/PVDC and PVC/Aclar laminates as well as cold-formed aluminium, which gives an almost complete barrier against moisture and oxygen. The right film is chosen from the formula, not from the price list.

Why does a small brand care about industrial machinery?

Because the cost of changing the line between products is what sets a minimum order. Modern equipment with recipe-driven settings changes over quickly, which is why a run of a few hundred units is possible here and not at a plant whose line takes a shift to reconfigure.

What is your minimum order?

A standard run is 500 bottles per product for capsules and tablets, and production takes 4 to 8 weeks from approval of the formula and artwork. First runs have been produced from 100 units — ask with your numbers, because the answer depends on the format and the pack.
